A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
